From ISIS to Community Empowerment: A Good Defence is the Best Offence

This lecture will talk about the genesis of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, how this terrorist group has metastasized and recruited across the world. From the challenges of fighting this group to the current loss of ISIS’ territory, Dr. Bessma Momani will examine how foreign fighters are now an intelligence and policing matter for Western governments. She will discuss how promoting community resilience in Western societies is not just more economical and feasible in tackling home-grown terrorism, but also how preventing violent extremism is the best offence against future home-grown threats to Western countries.

Dr. Bessma Momani is Professor of Political Science at the University of Waterloo and the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Canada. She is Senior Fellow at the Centre For International Governance and Innovation (CIGI), 2015 Fellow of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Doha Centre, and a regular media analyst and contributor to national and international media on the Middle East and on global economic governance issues.
